Happy Flour on Monday!

Counter the sourness a Monday (August, 31 5-7PM, and the last Monday of every month) brings with some sweets, as Kickass Cupcakes (map) of Somerville dishes out cocktail-themed goodies for two hours on Monday. Mudslides, Lemon Drops and Peach Daiquiris are on the menu, not to mention on the house. Should you be at the bar later, don't expect the same treatment.

2nd Annual Watergun Battle

I'm not gonna lie, this heat is getting to be ridiculous. With a lack of places to really cool off in Boston, why don't we all do ourselves a favor and just have a good old fashioned watergun battle.

Last year over 375 warriors rushed into battle, complete with marching armies, drums, fifes and bubble blowing robots. And this year, another battle is planned. But this time...even LARGER!
The battle is at an undisclosed location on Saturday, August 22 at 1:30PM.

FIRST YOU WILL NEED:
TO REGISTER HERE (very important because otherwise you will not know where to go for the battle)
1 UNLOADED water gun of your choice.
At least 3 FILLED two-liter bottles (bring more if you desire!)
1 back-pack to hold water bottles.- 1 either red or blue shirt (depending on army assignment).
Any other revolutionary paraphernalia you don’t mind getting wet (hats, flutes, etc)
As always, your fighting vigor and a bandanna!

The night before the event, emails will be sent out with army assignment and meet up location.

*Registration ends August 21st at 6:00PM. Register beforehand (or else you won’t know the location or be assigned an army beforehand! A sole soldier is a sad soldier.

Somerville...in Shorts! OUTDOOR ANIMATED FILMS

On a hot summer evening, Union Square lights up at nightfall with an outdoor screening of animated and experimental shorts by local filmmakers. The Somerville Arts Council and Somerville Community Access Television (SCAT) have joined forces to project work from local animators and experimental filmmakers. Ranging from drawn animation to stop motion, humorous to ponderous, this family-friendly film fest is the first of its kind in the area. This is the final weekend of the show and will begin at 8pm Friday (8/14) and Saturday (8/15) and at 7pm Sunday (8/16). Try to get a close spot because otherwise it's hard to hear and confusing because many characters have doubles so it's difficult to differentiate characters and follow the story. "to free or not to free, that is the question" and the answer is, yes, it's free.

Plimouth Plantation FREE Fun Friday!

The Plimoth Plantation will be open, free of charge (price typically $28 for adults), to the public in celebration of the Highland Street Foundation’s 20th anniversary. The foundation is sponsoring the Free “Fun Fridays” program that will provide free admission to a designated Massachusetts museum or attraction for ten Fridays this summer. Hopefully you could catch a ride with a friend out there to keep the cost down.

Midnight Bike Ride (Sat, Aug 8)

Saturday, August 8th, meet in front of Trinity Church, Copley Square at 11:15 pm, leave Copley around midnight. Traditionally, dawn finds the group at Castle Island, and there’s breakfast at the end in Christopher Columbus park. Riders are requested to bring a bike light, wear a helmet and something reflective, have a spare inner tube (that fits your tires), and bring something for breakfast. Commemorative T-shirts available.
It’s not a particularly taxing ride (about 30 miles or so) with stops to look at different sights along the way. Riding around the city at night when there is almost no traffic is really a neat experience, it’s fun to be out in a huge group, and to learn something of the history of the city.
Sponsored by the Back Bay Midnight Pedalers. More information available at 617-522-0259.

AND everyone's favorite visualist, V.Ka$h will be holding it down for your eyes.

Paint, Pens and MONSTERS!

Paint Pens in Purses, an all-female urban art collective, is throwing their summer art show at the fourth wall project (1301 Boylston Street, across from Yawkey Way)!! This upcoming show, themed “Paint Pens & Pet Monsters”, proudly showcases nine emerging and established low-brow and non-traditional artists.
The continuously growing group first started in the summer of 2008 and has done a range of art events including a Pop-Up gallery in a vacant space, a 20ft x20ft live painting on a storefront and a variety of other parties throughout the city. They are also in the process of producing a full-color book set to be released in the winter of 2009.
Confirmed artist lineup includes Jessica Hess (my personal favorite), Veronica Hebard, Allison Bamcat, Mykim Dang, Illy, Tofusquirrel, Rich Millionaire, Morgan Thomas & Shayna Shenanigans. Event hosted by Shayna Shenanigans.
